Each year, the inauguration of new members of the Young Academy provides an opportunity to organize a public event around a pressing and topical theme concerning science, the arts, and public policy. This year, the YA are pleased to welcome the Young Academy of Sweden (Sveriges Unga Akademi). Together, they will take a closer look at the freedom of science and art, which is increasingly under pressure internationally, alongside broader tensions surrounding democracy, public institutions, and trust in expertise. Policy choices, funding logics, the governance of higher education institutions, and dynamics of trust, reputation, and public controversy all shape what researchers are able to investigate, teach, and publish, as well as the artistic freedom artists experience to create and present their work. In this panel, they explicitly approach that freedom as a battleground: a space where definitions clash, boundaries shift, and where choices — and sometimes struggle — are required to safeguard the conditions for free and ethical knowledge and artistic production.
The event starts at 14:00 and ends at 16:30.
The first part of the program will be held in English, the second part in Dutch.
